Site improvement plan

Worked with client to identify location, size, and layout of classroom space and additional temporary stalls to existing equestrian facility to allow for hosting of riding clinics and educational seminars at the stable.

Master site plan

Developed simple, 2D master site layout for 14-acre private horse property in North Carolina to include 36' x 36' center-aisle barn with attached dry lot, outdoor riding arena, round pen, and pasture system for rotational grazing.  Challenges included defining land area to be cleared for pasture due to existence of routinely wet soils along creek corridor.

Master site plan & facility renovation recommendations

Developed master site renovation plan for a small (5-acre) horse farm in North Carolina.  The property included an existing barn and 2-acre pasture.  Pasture layout and barn renovation focused on improved layout to maximize horse movement and time horses could be turned out of stalls -- whether in the dry lot or pasture.

Developed master site plan for a 45-acre private horse farm in Michigan, including eight-stall barn, hay and equipment storage, arena, and round pen; pasture and paddock design/layout; pasture seeding recommendations; composter and composting plan.

Developed master site plan for 14-acre undeveloped parcel for private hobby farm with two horses and mule; helped client navigate the purchasing process for 6-stall Barn Pros kit-style barn, including design modifications and stall/accessory recommendations; developed pasture layout including seeding, fertilizing and watering recommendations and equipment needs; provided fencing, paddock and composter recommendations.

Retained by client’s architect to review equestrian component of master site plan for 1200-acre private estate on the coast of Panama; advised architect on custom barn design; developed pasture layout, seeding and management plan; composting and pest control plans; evaluation of existing riding trails and recommendations for improvement

Land pre-purchase evaluation

Visited client’s 150-acre property (largely undeveloped) prior to purchase to evaluate feasibility for use as 30 horse boarding, training and retirement facility.  Plan to develop master site plan following land purchase by client.

Developed site improvement plan for existing private 5-acre horse farm.   Standing water/mud a major issue on farm so improvements focused on mitigating these issues; developed composting plan; new arena location, and improved pasture layout and management plan; rainwater harvesting recommendations.

Horse farm best management practices

Partnered with North Carolina Division of Soil and Water and NC Horse Council on $300k grant to fund best management practices (BMPs) on horse farms in local watershed, including composters, pasture and riparian restoration, and heavy-use areas for improved pasture management.  Advised project engineer on BMP design and led education efforts.  Project is currently ongoing.

Developed master site plan for 130-acre, private hobby farm.  Property located on mountaintop so topography (in addition to site improvements) modeled in 3xD; plan included rainwater harvesting and off-grid solar.

Provided client with recommendations for arena location and composting solution for 30-acre, 4 horse farm.

Conservation Easement Evaluation 

Helped client to evaluate conservation easement opportunities on 140-acre farm.   Coordinated site visit to farm by NC state ecologist who surveyed the property, discovering unique and rare plant communities along riparian corridor.  Farm was subsequently classified as ‘significant natural heritage area’ by state, increasing interest by land trusts in purchasing riparian conservation easement from farm.

Retained by Wake County (NC) Soil and Water Conservation District to develop compost management plan for local equestrian community.
